Peter Hum Quintet
January 28, 2011When I was assigned to the court bureau for the Ottawa Citizen, I shared an office for a year with Peter Hum. We were a classic odd couple. I was unkempt, raucous, and willing to sacrifice anything and everything for the job. Peter was meticulously dressed, reflective and managed to balance the pressures of the office with a healthy personal life. Of course, at time I found Peter’s behaviour completely incomprehensible; now I realize he perhaps had the most civilized attitude any journalist I knew. And despite all the adrenalin rush big stories and riotous evenings with defense lawyers and prosecutors, I find that my quiet panini lunches with Peter have emerged as one of my fondest memories from that time.
