It’s Over Steve
April 26, 2011It takes a while for Canadian trends to trend across the Atlantic to Marseille, but thanks to my friend Sarah Martin I have now discovered the ‘It’s Over Steve’ campaign.
It’s a project where Canadian women post their complaints about Stephen Harper’s government in the form of break-up videos. The idea is to encourage Canadian women to get out and vote in the May 2 election in hopes of ousting Harper from power.
For those unfamiliar with Canadian politics, Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party has benefited from massive vote splitting among a fractured left (the Liberals, the NDP, and the Green Party) and a separatist party in Quebec (Bloc Quebecois) in order to win national elections with a minority of votes. Harper then exploits his minority power to push through policies – he’s killed environmental legislation, he’s cut funding to the arts and women’s groups, etc etc – that the majority of Canadians oppose.
The ‘It’s Over Steve’ campaign is encouraging Canadian women to vote in hopes of electing a government that actually represents the majority of Canadians. Here are two articles about the movement : Globe and Mail + Hamilton Spectator.
