Parabéns Santos
June 23, 2011Fantastic news from Santos, Brazil: The local football team, FC Santos, won the Copa Libertadores by beating Penarol of Montevideo, Uraguay 2-1 in the second leg of the final. (The first leg was a scoreless draw.) The Copa is the South American equivalent of the Champions League and one of the most sensational sports events on the planet. This is a huge victory for Santos, as it has always been considered one of the grand Brazilian teams but hasn’t won the Copa since the early 1960s when Pele played for the team.
Now, you might be asking why am I so thrilled by the victory? Well, when I appeared at the Tarafa Literária in Santos, I was given a tour of the FC Santos stadium, a personalized shirt from the club, and I played football at their training grounds, an event that was so emotional for me that I teared up during the shooting of this documentary.
To all my friends in Santos, parabéns, and I wish I was there to celebrate with you.
