New York & A Non-Early Adopter
March 16, 2016I remember reading Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point back in 2000 or 2001 and thinking rather humbly that I may not be an innovator but at least I was an early adopter. Ha! As time marches and technology sprints, I find myself clinging to the familiar. How bad is it? Well let’s just say last week I discovered an exciting new way to listen to music. Anybody heard of Spotify? I think it is going to be big…Luckily, the forces of the universe occasionally push into discovering what the trendsetters are buzzing about. I had followed the rise of Uber and its societal consequences in The Economist, Planet Money, and Freakonomics, but I had never actually been in a Uber car. Then New York Magazine asked me to ride around in Ubers in Marseille for a feature they were doing on Uber drivers around the world. And, seven years after the company that revolutionized the transportation was founded, I found myself in an Uber. And, I have to say, I can see what all the fuss is about.
